Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera, Superbad) is a heartbreaking accident, a Canadian slacker who obsesses over girls who have dumped but realizes how much dumped other girls. But blurring the rest of his life (including playing bass in a group) to insignificance when he lays eyes on Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Live Free or Die Hard), impassible girl of his dreams pixie . Unfortunately, Ramona has a serious background: seven deadly exes, and Scott has to fight against them all, if he wants to date Ramona. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is saturated in pop culture, video games in particular. Many events make almost no sense, but it does not matter – the ferocity and pure joy of narrative invention sweep the viewer along. Cera pushes his geek / dork Dreamboat character to new heights of sweet twee-ness, if this film does not shoot him in the stratosphere, we live in a cold, indifferent universe, deprived of justice. The entire cast of support (including Kieran Culkin, Jason Schwartzman, Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, and a host of less familiar but excellent young actors) plays every moment for all it’s worth. This film is supremely cool and passionate, making it a must. – Bret Fetzer
